Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse

A few years after opening for business in 1962, Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Abbott commissioned Ifland Engineers, Inc. to design a New England style lighthouse to replace the old wood structure on which a beacon light had been mounted and had served as the lighthouse since 1948. The commissioned lighthouse was donated to the City in memory of Mark Abbott, the Abbotts’ 18 year old son, who drowned in a surfing accident. Currently, the lighthouse is home to the “Santa Cruz Surfing Museum”.

Architectural design was provided by Richard Ifland and the structural design by Donald Ifland, two of the three Ifland brothers who founded Ifland Engineers, Inc. This may be the smallest building ever designed by Ifland Engineers, Inc., but it is the most notable and photographed structure in the City of Santa Cruz, and is the City’s official logo.
