Salz Tannery / Tannery Arts Center

Description

In 2006 the City of Santa Cruz Redevelopment Agency purchased the historic tannery site on River Street adjacent to the San Lorenzo River.  This 8.43 acre site had been in use as a tannery from 1852 until 2002.  Five of the original buildings were saved from demolition:  the Kron House, the Beam House, the Tanyard, the Hide House and the Changing Room Building.

The first phase of redevelopment was to clear a portion of the site, remove contaminated soil and construct two 3 story buildings with 50 apartments each and under-building parking This phase also included on-site parking, landscaping A.D.A. access from River Street, sewage lift station and traffic signal modifications at River and Encinal Streets

The second phase involved the rehabilitation of the Beam House and Tanyard Building, two significant historical buildings that now make up the Digital Media Center which includes working studios for local artists.

The third phase included the construction of additional parking at the north end of the site and the rehabilitation of the Kron House.

The fourth and final Phase has yet to be designed (2012).  The preliminary proposal is for a Performance Arts Center that would include a theater with 230 seating capacity, space for the Santa Cruz Ballet, a restaurant, office space for non-profit arts group, classrooms and a gallery.

Ifland Engineers, Inc. has completed design services on all phases of the project as of 2011.  (A final, fourth phase remains to be completed in the near future).  The completed design services included, site grading and drainage, storm water quality control, sanitary sewers including a pump station, water system and distribution for domestic and fire prevention-protection, site erosion control, parking lots, traffic signal modifications, River Street widening, with curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
