IFLAND ENGINEERS INC. (IEI) is a professional consulting engineering firm established in 1962. For the last 50 years, IEI has provided civil engineering and structural design services for thousands of public and private improvement projects in Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara Counties. IEI has a reputation for being responsive, open minded, collaborative and trustworthy.

Clients appreciate that Ifland Engineers Inc. are consistently available to them, are willing to consider ideas from others, take the time to engage agency personnel prior to submitting plans for review and deliver services in a professional yet personal manner. IEI has a philosophy of engaging reviewing agency staff in project design which establishes rapport and facilitates design review in a collaborative approach. The result is fewer review comments and shorter time to permit issuance.

IEI's civil engineering project history encompasses over 225 residential subdivisions, commercial and industrial site design, street and roadway design, site planning and feasibility studies, low impact development grading and drainage techniques, flood studies, design of storm water quality compliance measures including NPDES and erosion control BMPs, as well as sewer and water system design. They also provide storm water pollution prevention plan (SWPPP) preparation and implementation through our certifications as Qualified SWPPP Developer (QSD) and Qualified SWPPP Practitioner (QSP).

IEI's structural engineering work includes the design of commercial buildings constructed of concrete, steel or timber, single and multi-family residential buildings, foundation and retaining walls, bluff and slope stability measures and bridges. They facilitate the development planning process by offering boundary and topographic surveys, site master planning, tentative map preparation, owner representation, application and permit processing, infrastructure planning and preliminary development studies. They also work with municipalities, private developers (commercial, residential, mixed-use, affordable housing), builders, universities and schools districts, churches, healthcare/medical facilities, home owners, geotechnical engineers, architects and landscape architects to provide quality service and assisting them to meet their project needs. They work together with owners and designers to promote building projects that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work.

Current/Recent Projects

Aptos Village – IEI is providing tentative map and preliminary plans for this 11.5 acre mixed use development in the historic village of Aptos, CA. The project will include a mix of commercial/retail/office space, residential units via live/work units and townhomes and a "village green" where informal gatherings and community events can take place. New streets will improve circulation through the village area and an advanced drainage system utilizing pervious pavements, raingardens, bioswales and groundwater recharge will provide filtration and detention of stormwater runoff prior to discharge to two impacted water bodies, Aptos and Valencia creeks. The project is currently in discretionary review by the County of Santa Cruz.

Live Oak Resource Center – This 7,400 SF LEED© Platinum certified building, the first Platinum building in Santa Cruz County and the 10,000th certified building by the USGBC in the U.S., opened to the public in 2011, providing a home for several social services programs serving the local community. It features pervious pavers, underlying stone bed reservoirs for filtration, detention and limited groundwater recharge. A secondary water quality treatment unit prior to discharge from the site provides further stormwater filtration to protect downstream receiving waters. Close coordination with the landscape architect resulted in a beautiful and functional play area for toddlers integrating stormwater runoff BMP’s with landscape elements.

Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County – This 10,000 SF LEED© Gold certified building recently opened to house the offices of CFSCC, a philanthropic organization providing funding and resources to local non-profit groups. Pervious concrete with underlying stone bed detention, coupled with rock-filled shafts providing groundwater recharge mimic pre-development conditions. The project received one of the International Architecture Awards© for 2011 and was also recognized through an award from the Good Green DesignTM program, one of the world’s largest and oldest award programs for contemporary design.

University of California, Santa Cruz Merrill College – IEI is providing design of accessibility improvements for this extremely challenging site in the mountainous terrain of UCSC. The project consists of major maintenance to several dormitories and associated structures including sitework, accessible paths of travel, elevated walkways and accessible parking areas. Severe changes in elevation across the campus make code compliant accessibility a significant challenge. We relish the opportunity to explore and develop optimal solutions for all stakeholders.
